Feedback on the Wired Control Switch Enables Forward-Compatible Product Capability

A user reported that while using the HDC202-X24, the device could not switch inputs via the wired control switch.
Based on the product documentation, the user had expected to control the KVM ports more directly and conveniently using an external wired switch.
After receiving the feedback, we reviewed the device version and its feature support.
It was confirmed that:
  • The wired control switch functionality was introduced in a later version of the device, while the user was using an earlier version.
  • In the current firmware, this feature had not yet been activated.
Further analysis revealed that the hardware design already reserved the interface for the wired control switch and provided the complete electrical conditions.
The lack of functionality was not due to hardware limitations but rather because the older firmware did not integrate the corresponding control logic.
This meant that, through firmware optimization, older devices could also support this feature.

Bringing New Features to Existing Devices

Based on the user’s real-world requirements, the engineering team made targeted firmware adjustments, adapting the control logic from the newer version to the architecture of the existing version and generating an upgradeable firmware package.
After the user upgraded, the device successfully recognized and responded to wired switch input. Port switching functionality worked normally, and overall behavior matched that of the latest version.
This adjustment did not alter the hardware but enabled existing devices to gain a capability originally only available in newer models.

Improving Documentation to Reduce Misunderstandings

During this process, we also reviewed the existing product documentation.
The original instructions did not clearly specify the versions that supported the wired control switch, which could lead users to assume all devices supported this feature.
Based on this feedback, we updated the documentation to include:
  • Clear version ranges for wired control switch support
  • Upgrade guidance for older firmware
  • Detailed connection and usage instructions for the wired switch
This allows users to better understand device capabilities and available upgrade paths.

Expanding Device Capability Beyond Version Limits

The change from this feedback goes beyond fixing a single user issue.
Through firmware adaptation, the wired control switch functionality expanded from “only available in new versions” to “accessible on existing devices as well.”
This ensures that product capability is no longer fixed at the time of manufacture but can evolve according to real user needs.
The user raised a specific usability problem, and the result is a substantial extension of product compatibility and feature accessibility.
