A Simple USB Audio Issue That Sparked a KVM Upgrade

A customer purchased the HKS401-M24 KVM with the goal of seamlessly switching between multiple hosts for gaming and live streaming. However, when he connected a Nintendo Switch Dock, he ran into an unexpected problem: The KVM did not allow USB audio to be disabled.

For him, this was not a minor inconvenience. During live streaming or switching between gaming consoles, flexible control over audio output is critical to the overall experience.
He submitted a support ticket and clearly explained his use case, writing:
“You guys advertise your KVMs to work with gaming consoles, but without the ability to disable audio through USB(?), this KVM has a single major flaw for anyone using a Nintendo Switch dock.”

After receiving the feedback, our team scheduled a video call with the customer to reproduce the issue together. During the investigation, it became clear that this was not an edge case—it was a high-frequency, real-world scenario for gamers and streamers. Ignoring it would mean limiting the long-term usability of the product.

That led to a bigger question for the team: How can we maintain broad hardware compatibility while giving users more control over their setup?

In response, our engineering team decided to move beyond a simple workaround and introduced a hardware revision. The updated KVM includes a new feature that allows users to enable or disable USB audio as needed, making audio routing far more flexible and multi-host switching significantly smoother.

When the customer received the revised KVM and put it into use, the difference was immediate. He shared his excitement with us:
“Wow, amazing!!! You guys are awesome—thanks so much for looking into this for me. I am so excited to stream with it and play all my consoles from it.”

This experience reminded us that real product progress often starts with small, honest user feedback. One user’s voice didn’t just solve a single problem—it directly influenced a feature upgrade that now benefits countless gamers and streamers.

Thanks to this feedback, the KVM became more flexible—and the experience of switching, streaming, and playing became more seamless for everyone.
